HANDLE WITH CARE
Handle with Care is a simple, yet powerful model that implements trauma-informed practices for children who have experience a variety of stressful circumstances.
This model allows law enforcement to inform schools when one of their students has been exposed to a traumatic event and should be handled with care. The school then practices mindful observation and checks in if more supports are needed, thus improving their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral outcomes. Handle with Care encourages communities to work together to minimize the impact childhood trauma and minimize retraumatization.
The Handle with Care model originated with the West Virginia Center for Children’s Justice in 2013 and has spread across the nation. Georgia organizations have also started adopting this approach to best serve children.
